5th Grade Home-School Math Plan

Throughout 5th grade, students are expected to master their multiplication and division

facts through 12!  To encourage students to study these important facts, and to monitor their

progress, the  following home-school math plan will be in place during the 2012-2013 school year:

Ø  At the beginning of each month, the students will be given a handout listing

that month’s facts to be learned.

Ø  The facts will be studied by fact family so, the good news is, they really are only having

to learn ½ of the number of facts listed!  (For example, 2 x 3 and 3 x 2 will be listed in the same month).

Ø  Students are expected to study these facts at home on a regular basis.  Methods for studying may include being quizzed on the list of facts, studying fact flashcards, or utilizing any of the on-line resources for math fact practice.

Ø  Two times a month students will be given a homework assignment handout.  This will require students to practice their facts by filling in the answers on the facts being studied.  This handout will be taken as a homework grade.

Ø  At the end of each month, students will be given a short written assessment to test their recall of the facts assigned for that month, as well as facts that were assigned throughout the previous months.

Ø  Students who appear to be struggling with their facts will be provided with additional resources to practice in a fashion that will allow that student to be more closely monitored by the teacher.

Fifth Grade Reading Log (monthly homework)

Reading each day has been shown to improve independent reading level and increase student achievement.  In school, fifth graders are challenged with reading material that is above grade level (to challenge him/her with support), on their independent level (silent reading) and their instructional level (books within lexile range).

Students will have a two-part required daily reading log.  First, students will need to read every night and record what was read on the monthly form.  There is a line next to each date in the month (including weekends and holidays).  Second, your child will be required to read one Accelerated Reader book (within his/her lexile range) and pass the AR test.  Two separate homework grades will be recorded for this assignment (1 for independent reading and the second grade for the % scored on the AR test for fluency).   This form is due the first day of the following month (e.g. September’s form is due Monday, October 1st).

Each night your fifth grader will choose something to read and record it for each date.  Your child also has a choice of what to read (e.g. book, article, recipe, newspaper, directions for a game, computer summaries, study guides, summaries on homework etc…).  Students are encouraged to “work smarter, not harder;” meaning if there is a reading assignment for another class, please record that as part of the daily reading (not separate).  Reading an Accelerated Reader (AR) book can count for the AR book requirement and daily reading – simply record the book title each day until the book is completed.

At the beginning of each quarter (1st quarter will be after MAPs testing) I will give students independent AR goals based upon your child’s lexile range and grade level equivalency.  Students will be required to read and pass one AR test each month. The AR book needs to be at or above his/her Lexile range or it will not count towards AR rewards (classroom incentives and school-wide goals),
