PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
In keeping with the belief that the family is the basic, fundamental influence for growth and learning, we share with the parents and students the belief that our educational program should help to develop the total individual. The school’s major purpose is to encourage each individual student to realize his/her full potential and to become a contributing member of our society.

The means to accomplish this belief and purpose are the following:

  1. The school personnel, the individual student and parent are mutually responsible for the highest possible development of skills and attitudes of all students.
  2. The teachers and students should positively interact through a curriculum which emphasizes:

  3. a. communication skills – reading, writing, listening, speaking
    b. computation skills
    c. science and social studies skills
    d. physical and health skills
    e. aesthetic skills – art, music, drama, etc.
    f. vocational and career skills

4. These skills will be taught in such a way as to provide students with sufficient opportunities and experience to develop self-awareness, cultural awareness and social responsibility.

It is important for students to appreciate and enjoy learning during their school experience and continue to pursue learning as a lifelong activity.

Our commitments
That we may do a more effective job, the total staff of Crestview Elementary School shall work as a unified team, giving support, encouragement and counsel to each other, and sharing jointly the responsibilities in our common concern for the teaching/learning situation.

Individually we shall be constantly striving for self-improvement. Collectively we shall be faithful to the group function and our common task as enablers in the education process. Together we shall do whatever we can to encourage within the students a continuing desire for learning and an independent attitude toward intellectual pursuits.

Together we shall accept the challenge to develop the thinking processes of those we teach, that they may make responsible judgments, live successfully and fulfill their obligations to themselves and society.

ACCIDENTS/ILLNESS
Unfortunately, accidents do happen. All minor injuries are treated in the office and an accurate log is kept on every student who reports to the office with an injury or illness. Parents are notified in cases of head injuries or other more serious injuries. Please do not panic – often, a child just needs reassurance and comfort from a parent.

ATTENDANCE
In order to reduce absenteeism and truancy in the Brunswick City Schools and to comply with the Missing Children Act, parents are required to call the school to verify student absences. The parent/legal guardian should call the number below by 10:00 a.m. each day of the absence and give the following information:

1. Student’s name
2. Your relationship to child
3. Teacher’s name and grade level
4. Reason for absence
5. Optional – you may request homework

Absence call-in phone number – 273-8103
(available 24 hours)

You must call the school EVERY DAY your child is absent. We are required by law to contact parents who fail to notify the school of their child’s absence. Please help us – we have many students absent each day.

If we do not receive a call and cannot reach a parent, the student will be considered unexcused/truant. If you are planning a vacation, please be sure to contact the school in advance.

Attendance in class is a necessary part of education. Regular attendance and punctuality are important to successful learning. Parents will receive a letter concerning attendance after any student has missed ten days of school or has been continuously tardy.

BOOKS
All basic and supplementary texts are furnished by the Brunswick Board of Education. We encourage your child to take good care of their textbooks. All textbooks are to be covered to help extend their life. Fines are imposed upon students who damage or lose their books. Textbooks range in price up to $35.00 and should see at least five years of service.

BUILDING ETIQUETTE
Our school is a place of which we should all be proud. Each person is asked to help keep it clean and attractive. There should be no loud talking or running in the building. All students are expected to be polite to each other, faculty, staff members and parents. Students should respect the request of any faculty/staff member who reminds them of building etiquette.

BUS RULES
Students are to conduct themselves properly on the bus. The rules listed below are to be followed at all times:

1. Stay in your seat.
2. Keep hands to yourself.
3. Talking is permitted – loud noise is not.
4. Follow bus driver’s instructions.

Live animals, etc. are NOT permitted on the bus. Musical instruments are acceptable if they fit under the seat or can be held on the child’s lap.

BUS STOP BEHAVIOR – Please take a few moments to speak to your child about the importance of proper behavior at the bus stop. Throwing stones, sticks, snowballs, etc. is dangerous. Please discourage walking in the middle of the street, standing at the edge of the road and running around the bus stop area.

REQUEST TO RIDE ANOTHER BUS – Students are NOT permitted to ride another bus other than their designated bus. Students may, however, get off at a different stop after receiving approval from the principal – this must be requested in writing from the parent.

COLLECTION OF MONEY
Money can be a problem at times in the school, especially if children carry more than they need. Money sent to school for weekly lunches, field trips, workbooks, etc. should be enclosed in an envelope with the child’s name, amount, purpose and teacher’s name written on the outside. Money should be in the correct amount whenever possible. This will eliminate the child’s responsibility of having to carry change. All checks should be made out to the “Brunswick Board of Education”.

CONFERENCES
Each teacher has time set aside in his/her schedule for conferences upon request. A parent is welcome to consult with a teacher any time a need arises by writing or phoning to request a conference appointment. The teacher will call during non-class time to arrange a specific date and time. Please do not “drop in” for private conferences, since teachers’ daily routines are tightly scheduled.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES – Regular conference dates are established twice per year. Parents will be notified of these dates in ample time for arrangements to be made for babysitters, etc. If at any time before or after the regular conference you would care to discuss a matter with the teacher or principal, please feel free to call and schedule an appointment.

CUSTODY
Please make sure our records are updated concerning custody information. We require a current copy of your divorce decree from the court. Academic records can be released to non-custodial parents upon request.

DIRECTORY INFORMATION
Directory information concerning a student may be disclosed by the school, unless the parent or student 18 years of age or older has requested in writing that all or part of such information is not to be released. In emergency situations, requests to not release directory information will be honored as soon as it is reasonably convenient to do so.

Parents and students will be informed annually of the school district’s definition of directory information in each school’s student handbook and the district’s annual report. Procedures of disclosure and requesting non-release will be included along with all other rights.

Directory information records may include the following:

DISCIPLINE

Proper control and discipline of a school depends largely upon the degree of teamwork between parents, students and staff. Children are expected to acquire the habits of responsible self-direction and common courtesy. Students are expected to conduct themselves properly during the school day and while participating in school activities, including bus transportation. Parent cooperation when problems arise is very important.

Disciplinary Code

Fees will be requested from each student to help pay transportation, admission or facility use costs.

FIRE AND TORNADO DRILLS
Fire and tornado drills must be conducted at the school on a regular basis according to section 373.29 of the Ohio Revised Code. Crestview has fire drills monthly and three tornado drills in the spring.

GRADING
Brunswick City Schools use letter grades on report cards. Listed below are percentage grades and their letter equivalents:

A – 92-100
B – 83 – 91
C – 74 - 82
D – 65 – 73
F – 0 – 64

REPORT CARDS
Brunswick Schools are on a nine-week reporting system. Teachers make every effort to be fair in evaluating your child. If you are concerned about your child’s progress or feel communication between the home and school needs improvement, please contact your child’s teacher or the principal. It is very important that all facts be known before conclusions are drawn. We welcome the opportunity to discuss your child’s overall achievement at any time.

PROMOTIONS AND RETENTIONS
Promotions and retentions are based on an evaluation of academic, physical, social and emotional growth. The primary reasons for considering retention are listed below:

1. Indifference or lack of effort on the part of a capable student
2. Physical or social immaturity
3. Frequent or extended absences

Retention is usually considered a more positive alternative during the first and second grades. Parents can assume their child will be promoted unless the alternative of retention has been discussed during the school year. All retentions require a team meeting along with agreement on the part of the parents.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress reports will be sent home every 4-1/2 weeks into each grading period.

GROUP TESTING/S SCREENING
Ohio Based Proficiency Assessment (OPBA)– Grades 1, 2, 3 and 5 have been selected by Brunswick City Schools as the COMPETENCY test mandated by the state. Competency tests are criterion referenced to our local curriculum. Criterion referenced tests measure students’ learning of required curriculum objectives in writing, reading, math, citizenship and science based upon the State’s Model Courses of Study. OPBA has the same test format as the Proficiency Tests. Passing competency means the student has demonstrated a MINIMAL acceptable level of subject area knowledge as determined by the local school district.

Terra Nova Survey– a smaller version of the CAT test given to Grades 3 and 5 provide NATIONALLY NORMED information – how your student is doing compared to other students of the same age who have taken the test (nationally). There is no pass or fail; students are ranked according to the average achievement of the student in the national norming group.

Test of Cognitive Skills (TCS)– to grades 3 and 5 to determine ABILITY related to anticipated achievement.

Proficiency Tests– for grades 4 and 6 are mandated by the State of Ohio for measuring student achievement against state-set standards for writing, reading, math, citizenship and science.

Medication will be given only from original and properly labeled containers. Physician forms and parent consent forms must be completely filled out and renewed at the start of each school year or with any changes such as dosage adjustment or a change in attending physicians. These procedures will help ensure the safety of all students. Thank you for your cooperation.

Prior to the administration of medicines pursuant to federal law or this regulation, the following criteria shall be met:
