Fine
Arts Academic Content Standards:
Brunswick
City Schools have adopted and are committed to the Fine Arts academic content
standards for what all students should know and be able to do in the arts at the
varying grade levels in the state of Ohio.
These standards, benchmarks, and grade-level indicators are the basis for
Brunswick City Schools Course of Study for Art, Music, and other fine arts
instructional programs. The
following Academic Content Standards are used for Memorial Elementary Students
grades 1-5 in Art.
Historical,
Cultural and Social Contexts
Students
understand and appreciate the historical, social, political, and cultural
contexts of the arts in societies past and present. They understand visual and performing works of art in a
framework of time and culture to develop a world view of the historical
development of the arts.
Creative
Expression and Communication
Students
engage in the process of creating and performing works of art.
They use the symbolic languages, structures and techniques of each arts
discipline to express and communicate ideas.
Analyzing
and Responding
Students
identify and discriminate among the formal, technical and expressive aspects in
visual and performing works of art. They
understand and use the vocabulary of art criticism to describe, analyze,
interpret and evaluate visual and performing artworks.
Valuing
the Arts/Aesthetic Reflection
Students
understand why people create and value the arts and consider differences in
personal and community perspectives regarding the arts. They inquire about the
nature and experience of the visual and performing arts in their lives. They
present their points of view about visual and performing works of art and
respond thoughtfully to others’ points of view.
Connections,
Relationships and Applications
Students
connect and apply learning in each arts discipline to other academic disciplines
and to relevant careers. They recognize the importance of lifelong learning and
experiences in the arts.
Grading:
The
grading scale is based on the Brunswick City Schools standardized grading scale
for grades K-2 and 3-5.
Weights:
All
curriculums within Brunswick require that students be assessed on their ability
to demonstrate the adopted State Standards and grade level Benchmarks through
multiple types of assessments with various opportunities to be assessed
throughout each Semester. Assessment
types and weights are indicated below.
Unit
Projects 50%
Written
Assignments 25%
F/M/B
Drawing Assignments 25%
“While
viewing your child’s grades in Progressbook, please disregard the column that
is titled “Weight.” As
mentioned above, assessments are weighted as indicated according to percentages.
All assessments are not worth the same weight.
The weight of “1” refers to another calculation over which teachers
have no control.”
Keep
in mind that your child is not graded on each of these during every class.
Their may be only one or two areas in which they receive a grade.
Assignment
Types and Assessments:
As
stated in each Course of Study the agreed upon types of assessment for Brunswick
City Schools are Forced Choice, Short Answer, Extended Response, Performance Assessment,
and Personal
Oral Communication. Written
assessments are given in Art and Music to fulfill these requirements for all
Memorial Elementary students as well as opportunities to use self-assessments,
peer assessments, and portfolios.
Due
Dates:
Students
are given ample time to complete all their work and assignments in class on or
before the official due dates when they remain on-task in Art.
If needed students have multiple opportunities to continue unfinished
work in art during free-times and/or during recess and/or other
intervention/flex times throughout the semester.
Additional time will be allotted, if a student has been absent for more
than one or two Art days and only if as needed.
Artist
of the Month:
We
will continue to have “Artist of the
Month.” The announcements for
artist of the month awards are made each semester.
Students will receive recognition with their artwork on display in the
hallway and a certificate of achievement in Art that will go home when the
display is taken down.
What’s
new this year:
New
this year are the Upstanding Student Awards in Art.
Students may earn these awards of character, merit and effort daily and
will be stapled in their planners to better help communicate excellence in
effort, achievements, kindness, etc. during each Art class.
