Memorial’s Holiday Program

Mr. Gonda has been working with our fifth graders to present a holiday music program on Friday, December 19th (rescheduled to January 9th), at 9:45 AM. All fifth graders and the students in our 4th and  5th grade choirs have been preparing some holiday numbers for our listening pleasure. I hear tell that some of the 5th graders will also be playing a song or two on their recorders. Mr. McGrew will be joining us with a couple of songs played by our fifth grade band students. Our 5th grade strings students will also perform under the direction of Miss Szymanski. I am looking forward to a morning of holiday songs. Hope you can join us.

Catch Memorial’s Holiday Program On Cable & Web

The holiday programs of the area schools will be featured on cable Channel 22, the BEAT, over the holiday break. New this year, you can also tune in to this programming on the school district website at www.brunswickschools.org.  It can be accessed by clicking on the link titled Streaming Video. Hope you enjoy the holiday programs.

Bus Safety Concern

Brunswick City Schools Transportation Coordinator Carol Bennett has asked that we get a message out to parents of students who ride school buses. Daily the bus drivers see parents who attempt to catch up to a bus in their automobile, and then have their child run to catch the school bus from behind. This dangerous practice has been observed time and time again.  Unfortunately, this creates an extreme risk for the student- it places them in a situation where the bus driver has no chance of seeing either the automobile or the student as they run along the side of the bus. Students should NEVER run to catch a bus, especially from behind, or from a car that has pulled up behind a bus.  It would be far safer for the parent to transport the student to their school building or to a bus stop at which the bus has not yet arrived. Please help us keep your child safe as they ride to and from school.

Outside or Inside Recess?

We go outside for recess if the wind chill is above 20 degrees and it is not raining, too snowy, or too icy. Please have your child dressed for the weather everyday as we may be going outside for recess. That includes something on their head, gloves/mittens, a winter coat, and boots.

Arrival and Frigid Weather

A reminder that students are not to arrive at school before 8:55 AM (please refer to the Memorial Student Handbook). When the temperature is 20 degrees or under, students will be brought inside at 8:55 AM and they will wait until the first bell rings at 9:00 AM and then will be directed to their classrooms. Please be sure that students are dressed appropriately for the weather.

Kids Hope USA at Memorial

Memorial Elementary School has developed a new partnership with Brunswick United Methodist Church through KIDS HOPE USA -- a program that trains caring older teens and adults how to mentor children and help them learn. A KIDS HOPE USA Mentor is someone who is trained to:

  • Meet with teacher-recommended students for one hour each week at the school for a least one school year.

  • Work with these children in practicing certain academic skills, including reading.

  • Be a positive role model and friend who could give these students a positive experience.

I am very excited to report that we have 15-20 trained mentors who have volunteered from the church to work with our Memorial students. All these mentors have been fingerprinted and background checked,  in accordance with district procedures. Please note that the KIDS HOPE USA program complies with the separation of church and state. No religious activity of any kind will take place on school property during school hours.
