Early Entrance to Kindergarten
-
For parents of incoming kindergarten students: The Brunswick Board of Education adopted a revised board policy indicating a change to the Kindergarten birthday cut-off date. Effective beginning the 2017-2018 school year, the new policy states that "A child is eligible for entrance into kindergarten if s/he attains the age of five (5) on or before August 1st of the year in which she/he applies for entrance." Only children who are both academically talented and of superior ability are admitted for Early Entrance.
The areas of criteria which must be met.
- The student must not have a sibling in the same grade level or in the grade level above to which the student would be accelerated.
- The student must have an I.Q. of 115 or higher on a standardized cognitive assessment.
- The student must reach scores specified in the Iowa Acceleration Scales in both academic achievement and aptitude. Achievement is a measurement of present levels and aptitude is a measurement that is normed for two grade levels above.
- The student must acquire a minimum of 10 total points as outlined in the Iowa Acceleration Scales between ability (I.Q.), achievement, and aptitude.
If the student should obtain 10 points or higher between ability, achievement, and aptitude testing, then a meeting will be held with the parents, gifted coordinator, school psychologist, potential kindergarten teacher, and potential new principal. The team will discuss additional factors such as student maturity, development, interpersonal skills, and attitude to determine if early entrance to kindergarten is appropriate.
