Early Entrance to Kindergarten
For parents of incoming kindergarten students: The Brunswick Board of Education adopted a revised board policy indicating a change to the Kindergarten birthday cut off date. Effective beginning the 2017-2018 school year, the new policy states that "A child is eligible for entrance into kindergarten if s/he attains the age of five (5) on or before August 1st of the year in which she/he applies for entrance." Only children who are both academically talented and of superior ability are admitted for Early Entrance.
Testing for Early Entrance to the Brunswick City School District typically takes place in April or May. The placement criteria are set at a high level of difficulty so that the under-aged child will not be disadvantaged by his or her age difference. Children will have an individual evaluation by a school psychologist to determine whether they meet all of the following criteria: intelligence within the very superior range of ability as measured by a standardized intelligence test (i.e., children whose intelligence falls within the gifted range); visual-motor maturity at a 6-year-old level (i.e., children whose paper/pencil skills equal a first-grade child); superior reading and math skill development; evidence of superior social/emotional adjustment as observed by the school psychologist.
Parents who feel their child may meet all of the above criteria need to write a letter that includes the following information:Child's nameBirthdateAddressPhone Number(s)Name of parent(s) or guardian(s)Elementary school building child would attend based on residenceDescribe why you feel your child meets the early entrance requirements
