The study of the Arts is an essential part of a high school students academic experience. The Music Department curriculum atBrunswickHigh Schoolprovides students with opportunities to develop and strengthen those skills essential to the study of music. Classes in instrumental and vocal music, music history and theory are available to all students.
810 CONCERT BAND/MARCHING BAND (1 CR.) 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: Concert band instrument and previous band experience.
This band is composed of students who have the ability to perform satisfactorily on any instrument in the concert band.Members are required to participate in the Marching bandunless they participate in a conflicting school sports activity. The students in this class perform at various concerts and adjudicated events throughout the school year. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory.
820 TREBLE CHOIR (1 CR.)L-2 9,10,11,12
This group is exclusive to female voices. The purpose of the ensemble is to explore the developing voices of this age level and also to begin to understand the skills necessary for proper vocal technique. All choir performances are considered part of the course requirement.
822 CONCERT CHOIR (1 CR.)L-2 9,10,11,12
This group is open to both male and female voices. The choir is recommended for those students who enjoy singing, yet are not ready to perform in an auditioned choir. The students will be taught the skills of sight-reading, choral musicianship, and vocal technique. All choir performances are considered part of the course requirement.830 ORCHESTRA/PHILHARMONIA (1 CR.) 9,10,11,12
Philharmonia concentrates on the fundamentals of orchestral ensemble performance. This is a good group for the student with limited experience in this area. Philharmonia is open to any music student who can perform satisfactorily on a string instrument. This is a course for string instruments only.
832 ORCHESTRA/CAMERATA (1 CR.) 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: Private audition and previous ensemble experience.
Camerata is a high level orchestral ensemble. This is a good group for the student desiring a greater challenge in literature and performance standards. Camerata is open to any string student who passes the audition. During the audition the candidate must demonstrate knowledge of scales, perform a prepared selection and demonstrate good sight-reading ability. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is mandatory.

Prerequisite:Enrollment based on audition. Concert band instrument experience required.
This band is the most advanced instrumental music ensemble and is open only through audition with the director.Members arerequired to participate in the Marching bandunless they participate in a conflicting school sports activity. The students in this class perform at various concerts and adjudicated events throughout the school year. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory.
814 JAZZ BAND (1 CR.) 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: Participation in Band (814 or 824) concurrently during the school year. Enrollment based on audition.
This course will provide the study and performance of literature in the jazz idiom. It is open through audition only to students who are enrolled in one of the concert bands (814 or 824). Exceptions are made for students who play guitar, bass guitar or piano, who must audition but are not required to be enrolled in a concert band.
824 MIXED SYMPHONIC CHOIR (1 CR.) 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: Private audition or recommendation of the choral director
The choir is the top performing vocal ensemble atBrunswickHigh School. Auditions are held at the end of the school year. Mixed Symphonic Choir performs literature from all genres and time periods of music. The repertoire can be accompanied or a cappella and requires a developed inner ear and expanded sensitivity to musicality. All choir performances are considered part of the course requirement.
800 MUSIC THEORY AND HISTORY (1 CR.) 10,11,12
This course is available for students who are interested in learning more about the history and theory of music. This course will acquaint them with the structure and form of music as well as a general survey of music history from antiquity to current popular music. The objective of the course is to help the student develop skills and techniques to listen analytically and critically to music of all styles. (Offered alternate years)805 MUSIC APPRECIATION (1 CR.) 10,11,12
Students will develop skills needed to enjoy participation in musical activities. Topics of study include: various musical genres, musical time periods and basic understandings of music elements and structures. (Offered alternate years)
Color guard consists of students chosen by a tryout held in the spring. An auxiliary unit of the marching band will perform in conjunction with the band during the 1stsemester. Members will be responsible for routines, attending all practices, and performing in various competitions.
YOUNG FOLK SHOW CHOIR 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: Two Part Audition Process
This performing group is selected at the end of each school year through an audition that includes a prepared vocal solo and a dance routine taught by the choreographer. They perform a variety of show and popular music in a review format. The group performs during the school year at concerts, community events, competitions and festivals.
VIVE LA MUSICA (Co-Curricular) 10,11,12
Prerequisite: Extensive Audition
This is a small auditioned group of extremely talented and advanced vocalists with an excellent sense of ensemble sound. Auditions consist of sight-reading, vowel placement exercises, choral blend, and vocal dexterity.
MENS CHOIR (Co-Curricular) 9,10,11,12
This ensemble is specifically designed to showcase and promote the men of the Choral Music Department. Membership is open to any student at the high school. The group meets after school to rehearse doo-wop, pop, folk, barbershop, or classical styles.
