Preschool Special Education Services

PRESCHOOL SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES

Brunswick City Schools Preschool offers both a center-based and an itinerant program to meet the needs of young learners.

Center-Based Program
The center-based program includes morning and afternoon classes, four days a week. Each class typically includes up to eight students with identified disabilities and four to eight typically developing peers, depending on age and class needs. Classes are led by licensed early childhood special educators and supported by trained classroom aides.
Students who qualify have access to speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, as well as other specialized services based on individual needs. The preschool curriculum is designed to help children develop gross and fine motor skills, social-emotional skills, self-help skills, and all the preparatory academic skills needed for kindergarten. Each child with special needs has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) tailored to their specific needs.

Itinerant Program
The itinerant program provides eligible students with specialized instruction in a variety of settings, based on what best meets their needs. Services may be delivered in a private preschool, at our school for therapy only, or in the child’s home.
A team approach ensures that each child’s needs are met. Team members may include parents, classroom teachers, teaching assistants/aides, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, school nurses, and administrators.
