Athletic Eligibility at BHS

All participants in athletic, extracurricular or co-curricular activities at Brunswick High School must meet the following academic eligibility requirements. The program is twofold, with a credit check and a minimum grade point requirement each 9 weeks. A probationary program is available to those not meeting the minimum grade point requirements.

Students grade 9-12, must have received passing grades in a minimum of five one-credit courses, or the equivalent, in a grading period immediately preceding, to be eligible. Students grades 7 and 8 must have received passing grades in 75% of classes attempted.

For eligibility purposes, summer school grades may not be used to substitute for failing grades received in the final grading period of the regular school year or because of the lack of sufficient courses passed during the preceding grading period.

Student not meeting these minimum requirements will be ineligible for participation in athletics, extra-curricular activities, and a portion of co-curricular activities for the duration of the current 9 week period.

The second requirement for academic eligibility is a 2.0 minimum grade point average for the grading period immediately preceding for grades 10, 11, and 12. The minimum grade point average for grades 7, 8, and 9 is 1.8.

After meeting the requirements outlined above, failure of classes will not preclude participation in athletics, co-curricular activities, or extracurricular activities.

If a student does not receive the minimum required grade point average, the student and parents or guardian will be notified. They will be given the opportunity to participate in a four-week probationary program involving the Athletic Director or Director of Student Activities and the students teacher in order to qualify for eligibility.

If the student does not raise his or her grade point average to the required level during the probationary period, he or she will become ineligible for participation in all athletic and or extra-curricular activities for the remainder of the grading period.

If the student and/or parents or guardian do not participate in the probationary program, the student will be declared ineligible for the entire grading period.
